The Only Brown Deaf Man in England is a Mercury Original in association with Camden People’s Theatre and in collaboration with Fuse Theatre.

Written by and starring Nadeem Islam, the production follows Rajkumar, a Deaf Bengali amateur cricketer, on a journey from 1970s Bangladesh to Brick Lane and post-9/11 Britain.

Through experiences of migration, racism, loss and family, Rajkumar approaches the changing world around him like a batsman at the crease, finding humour alongside the more difficult moments of his life.

The production combines British Sign Language and visual storytelling, with all performances presented in BSL with spoken English voiceover and English captions. No previous knowledge of BSL is required.

The Only Brown Deaf Man in England runs in the Mercury Studio from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 October 2026. The running time is approximately one hour with no interval and age guidance is 14+.
