23.17°C If Priscilla Queen of the Desert and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre sound like an unlikely pairing, Final Queen is here to prove otherwise.
The Australian production comes to The Dragonfly Lounge as part of the Colchester Fringe Summer Weekender, combining drag, circus, physical theatre and horror into an hour that promises to be unlike anything else in this year’s programme.
At the centre of the story is circus queen Grace Lightning, who sets off across the Australian outback with her two best drag friends after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime. Their road trip soon takes a darker turn as they stumble into a nightmare filled with strange creatures, supernatural surprises and a chainsaw-wielding bushranger.
Expect extraordinary circus skills, haunted acrobatics, blood-soaked hula hooping, plenty of camp humour and a generous helping of horror. Alongside the laughs and spectacle, Final Queen is also a celebration of resilience and queer joy, wrapped up in a show that happily refuses to fit into a single genre.
Created by Melbourne performer Harrison Sweeney, the production has been described by My Melbourne Arts as “creative, energetic, highly ridiculous”.
Final Queen will be performed at The Dragonfly Lounge, Unit 3, Foundation House, Long Wyre Street, on Friday 24 July at 8.30pm and Saturday 25 July at 6pm as part of the Colchester Fringe Summer Weekender.
