Colne Radio is hoping to raise £3,000 over the next two weeks with a crowd funding campaign to help the local station broadcast on FM. A community radio licence has been awarded by Ofcom. The station now needs the funds to make this a reality.
If successful then the radius of the station will cover the eastern edges of Colchester around the Hythe and the town centre, all the way out to Wivenhoe, Great Bentley and Brightlingsea.
It is the next step for a station that originally started broadcasting from a bedroom as Radio Wivenhoe in 2011.
Since then the volunteer base has grown. More than fifty local people offer their time to produce local programmes. There is also a dedicated off air team looking after the promotion, admin and management of Colne Radio.
The team at the station explains all…
“The crowd funder is an opportunity for Colne Radio to hopefully make new connections within our community. We would love to be able to broadcast live from recent events such as the Colchester Big Sunday. But we need a little more of a secure financial footing to help make this happen.
The target for the crowd funder is £3,000. This will help with securing the transmitter on the site that we have agreed upon. A planning application has already been submitted to Colchester Borough Council.
If we manage to raise £5,000 then we can also upgrade the studio and invest some money in our outside broadcasts. Anything else will be a bonus.
We would love to help train local people to find a career in music presentation or radio journalism. We already have links with the University and the Broadcast Journalism course.
The rewards on offer for the crowd funder offer an entry level for whatever amount you feel that you are kindly able to contribute. For £3 you can have a dedication read out on air. If you have £5,000 to spare then we will arrange for you to broadcast live on air on a boat from the River Colne!
Colne Radio may be a new name to many in the community. We have done well to move out of Wivenhoe bedrooms and to be in the position now where Ofcom believes that we deserve an FM licence.
As well as financial support, we also need you to help us spread the message of our crowd funder campaign. This is quite clear: Fund Colne Radio to help support the local community.
Please do share our Facebook and Twitter updates throughout the two week crowd funding campaign. This is a unique local area with plenty of character. We truly believe that a genuinely local radio station will be able to help reflect this, and help our patch to continue to thrive”.
