Sub Titles Over, written and performed by Marina Cusi Sanchez, played at the Lakeside Theatre, and after watching the piece, I completely understand the hype.

The piece follows two young anti-fascist activists as they defend a polling station on the day of the Catalan independence referendum (1 October 2017). Marina performs the play in Catalan with English subtitles projected behind her. These subtitles make witty remarks, censor Marina and help the audience along in the story. Technical Manager Shannon Houghton masterfully operates this tech-heavy show with ease.

I absolutely loved the piece. It was bold, funny, poignant and challenges audiences. Moulded with skilful world-building and storytelling, all while navigating themes of state censorship and protest with ease. My hat goes off to Marina and the Mad, Who? theatre company for this masterclass in storytelling.

My only issue with the piece was some of the multi-rolling. In the first half, it felt like there was no difference in their characteristics. However, this changed as the play went on.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the play and came away with an understanding of a topic I knew nothing about. Please go and support Mad, Who? Theatre company – you will not be disappointed.
