Fabio, a stalwart of the rave scene and one of the most influential broadcasters in the history of drum and bass, arrives at Tribal this Saturday, 10 October 2015. We asked resident MC and SubCulture co-organiser Alex Graham (AKA MC Pinkeye) for his thoughts ahead of the show…
DJ Fabio has achieved more than most in underground music. He coined the term ‘liquid funk’ at his legendary Rage parties – events that famously attracted the likes of David Bowie and Björk. Alongside Grooverider, he hosted the longest-running jungle and drum and bass radio show in history on Radio 1 between 1998 and 2012, toured the globe multiple times and remains widely regarded as a tastemaker and ambassador for quality, forward-thinking music.
Having recently marked 25 years of working alongside Grooverider, Fabio has been bringing music to the people since his first pirate radio show on Phase 1 in 1986. Across nearly three decades, he has helped shape jungle and drum and bass into what it is today. His radio shows were hugely important to me personally, introducing thousands of us to artists who are now considered household names within the scene. The work he has done cultivating both the music and the industry by supporting new talent continues to this day. On Saturday, we expect an hour of exceptional music – and that really says it all.
This Saturday also represents, in my opinion, our biggest club line-up of 2015, as SubCulture officially links up with one of the most prominent radio brands in global jungle, #RCFF.
If you’re not familiar with #RCFF (Run Come Follow Friday), it was launched by Uncle Dugs in 2011 on Rinse FM and remains the only legal old skool jungle daytime radio show in the world. Dugs has played as a SubCulture resident on several occasions, and anyone who’s been before knows what to expect – eclectic jungle selections delivered with energy, positivity and serious vibes. In the past, we’ve paired him with vocalists including The Ragga Twins, Navigator and YT. This tim,e he’s joined by legendary vocalist and Ribena Jungle / Kool FM resident MC Det. We’ve also invited Uncle Dugs’ brother and #RCFF / Ribena Jungle resident Jono D to add to the family atmosphere for this first official link-up.
Bringing artists like Fabio, Uncle Dugs and MC Det to Colchester through SubCulture is exactly what we love to do. We’re proud to now have the platform to host high-calibre talent in Colchester and beyond, showcasing quality music alongside our party sound. As long as we can keep putting these shows on, they’ll keep coming.
Digital, Amit and DJ Storm land in November. Beyond that, watch this space – and we hope you enjoy Saturday night as much as we intend to.
You can listen to Fabio and Grooverider’s debut Radio 1 show online to get a taste of what to expect.
Tickets for Saturday’s SubCulture at Tribal are available via Eventbrite until Saturday evening. Limited tickets will be available on the door, so early arrival is advised. Doors open at 9pm.
