Fabio, a stalwart of the rave scene and one of the most famous radio broadcasters in the history of Drum & Bass, arrives at Tribal this Saturday, 10th October. We asked resident MC and SubCulture co-organiser Alex Graham (AKA MC Pinkeye) his thoughts ahead of the show…

DJ Fabio (pictured) has achieved many things for underground music. He’s coined a genre – ‘Liquid-Funk’ at his infamous ‘Rage’ parties (which famously attracted stars like David Bowie and Bjork), hosted the longest running Jungle Drum and Bass radio show in history on Radio 1 between 1998 – 2012 with partner in crime Grooverider, toured the entire globe a couple of times over and is universally regarded as an ambassador for upfront, quality music and a taste-maker within Drum & Bass.

Having recently celebrated the 25-year anniversary of a working partnership with Grooverider (try not to focus on that date though!), DJ Fabio has been bringing music to the people since his first radio show in 1986 on the pirate station Phase1. A near 30 year career that has effectively created and elevated Jungle / Drum Bass music to what it is today. His radio shows were of personal importance as they single-handedly introduced me (and thousands of others) to artists we now consider household. The work Fabio has done over the years in cultivating both the music and industry by bringing through new artists continues to this day. On Saturday we fully expect him to play an hour of brilliant music – that’s all you need to know!

In my opinion this coming Saturday also represents our biggest club lineup of 2015, as SubCulture will be officially linking up with one of the biggest radio shows in the current global Jungle music scene, #RCFF.

If you don’t know #RCFF (Run Come Follow Friday) was set up by Uncle Dug’s back in 2011 on Rinse FM and is, to the present day, the only legal old skool/jungle day time radio show in the world. Dugs has played as a resident of Subculture on a handful of shows and people who’ve been in the past know what to expect from his sets, drawing on the most eclectic of jungle music and spreading not only vibes but energy and smiles. In the past we have teamed him up with vocalists such as the Ragga Twins, Navigator and YT, this time he’ll be teaming up with the legendary vocalist and Ribena Jungle/Kool FM resident MC Det. We have also invited Uncle Dug’s brother and #RCFF/Ribena Jungle resident Jono D to contribute to the family feel to our first link up.

Bringing artist’s like Fabio, Dugs & Det to Colchester whilst working on the Subculture project is something we love to do. We now have the ability to bring such high calibre artists to Colchester and the other towns we’re working in and showcasing good music and talent alongside our party sound is our passion. As long as we have the platform to put the shows on they’ll keep on coming.

Look out for Digital, Amit & DJ Storm landing in November. Apart from that, watch this space and we hope your enjoy Saturday night as much as we intend to…

Here’s a link to his debut Radio 1 show in case you still don’t know what to expect.
