Heroes used to be everywhere. They filled history books, stood on pedestals and gave people someone to look up to. So where have they all gone?
That’s the question at the heart of Heroic Scale, Will Davies‘ latest stand-up show, coming to Patch and Roots & Grooves Cafe as part of this year’s Colchester Fringe Summer Weekender.
“They say you should never meet your heroes,” Will said. “Which is easy enough since there doesn’t seem to be all that many of them knocking about.”
The show asks whether we really need heroes at all.
“Did we ever?”
Will describes the hour as “an epic voyage of discovery”, travelling from donkeys to Churchill, from antiquity to “the grim darkness of the far future”, before making it back in time for tea.
Delivered with the dry wit that reviewers have described as “subtle, subversive, and deeply funny”, Heroic Scale is aimed at “the curious, the nerds, and anyone who fancies they expect the unexpected.”
Asked what he’d like people to know before booking, Will’s answer had nothing to do with the show.
“You can get books from your local library, completely for free,” he said. “It’s absolutely mad. They want you to take them. It’s like they don’t even like having them around, and they’ve got SO MANY.”
If that made you smile, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy Heroic Scale.
